What are the best strategies for teaching reading comprehension in elementary school?Anabel Grant

I’m looking for new ideas for teaching reading comprehension to my second graders. I’ve been using methods like guided reading and group discussions, but need something more "fun" ... I’ve heard of using graphic organizers to help students visualize what they’ve read, and I’m interested in incorporating more read-alouds where we can pause to discuss key story ideas. Hi Anabel, I'd suggest using story maps... After reading a story aloud, you can guide the students in creating a visual map that outlines the main characters, setting, problem, and solution. It really helps them break down the story in a way that's engaging.

Another method you can try is "think-pair-share" during read-alouds. After reading for a bit, take a break, and ask your students a question they can think about, then let them share their thoughts with a partner / group before opening it up for discussion with the whole class. It keeps them actively involved and helps deepen their understanding.

I also love using reading comprehension games like "Story Dice," where students roll dice with different story elements (e.g., character, setting, problem) and then create their own mini-story. It's a lot of fun 😊 Hope these ideas help!
