Hey guys, I’m looking for creative ways to teach sentence writing to my first graders. Something that combines forming complete sentences and practice with spacing and punctuation. Any tips or resources would be greatly appreciated. Thanks 🙏
I think the main things you want to focus on are structure, repetition, and creativity. Copied these from one of our resources, hope it helps :)
1️⃣ Sentence Building with Word Cards – Give them a mix of word cards (subjects, verbs, objects) and make them form a complete sentence. No complete sentence? They try again.
2️⃣ Finger Spacing & "Space Man" Tools – No sloppy, squished-up words. Teach them to use a finger or a popsicle stick for proper spacing. Expect neatness.
3️⃣ Daily Sentence Fix-It – Every morning, give them a scrambled or incorrect sentence to rewrite correctly. Fix capitalization, spacing, and punctuation.
4️⃣ Picture Prompt Sentences – No “I see a dog.” Push them to add details: “I see a big brown dog running in the park.” Teach them early that more detail makes better writing.
5️⃣ Write It, Say It, Check It – They write a sentence, read it out loud, and check for mistakes. No rushing through sloppy work!
