Frequently Asked Questions
By the end of kindergarten, students should compare two numbers between 1 and 10 and determine which is greater, less, or equal (CCSS K.CC.C.6-7). They should identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number in another group using matching and counting strategies. Students also learn to compare two written numerals using reasoning based on their knowledge of the counting sequence. Worksheets with side-by-side groups of objects that children count and compare build this skill. Introducing symbols for greater than and less than is not required in kindergarten, but many programs introduce them informally to prepare for first-grade expectations.
