Frequently Asked Questions
Second graders should make inferences about characters' feelings, motivations, and actions using text evidence (CCSS RL.2.3, RL.2.6). They should also infer meaning from illustrations, determine the meaning of unknown words from context (L.2.4a), and predict outcomes based on evidence. The complexity increases from first grade: instead of simple picture-based inferences, second graders work with multi-paragraph texts and must combine clues from different parts of a passage. Worksheets that ask "How do you know?" after every inference question teach children to cite evidence. The "text clues plus background knowledge" formula introduced in first grade should become automatic in second grade. Students who consistently practice inference with varied text types (fiction, nonfiction, poetry) develop stronger critical thinking skills that support comprehension across all content areas.
