Frequently Asked Questions
Most preschoolers begin writing some letters independently between ages 4 and 5, after they have developed sufficient fine motor control through tracing and pre-writing activities. The letters in a child's own name are usually the first they write from memory, because these carry personal significance and have been practiced most often. Children typically master uppercase letters before lowercase because uppercase letters use simpler strokes (mostly straight lines and simple curves). Independent letter writing should emerge naturally from a tracing foundation. If a child can trace a letter smoothly, they may be ready to try writing it freehand. Worksheets that provide a model letter at the top and lined space below for independent attempts bridge the gap between tracing and writing. Do not rush this transition. Children who move to independent writing before their motor skills are ready may develop incorrect formation habits.
