Parts of Speech▼
Frequently Asked Questions
Kindergarteners should learn three basic parts of speech: nouns (naming words for people, places, and things), verbs (action words that tell what someone or something does), and adjectives (describing words that tell more about a noun). CCSS L.K.1 standards support all three: L.K.1b covers nouns, L.K.1b references verbs through sentence construction, and L.K.5b addresses descriptive words. Introduce nouns first because they are the most concrete, then verbs, then adjectives. At this level, use child-friendly definitions: nouns are naming words, verbs are doing words, adjectives are describing words. Worksheets that color-code parts of speech (nouns in blue, verbs in red, adjectives in green) help children visualize the different roles words play in sentences. Avoid teaching prepositions, conjunctions, or adverbs formally at this stage, though children use them naturally in speech. The goal is building awareness that words have different jobs in a sentence, which lays the foundation for more detailed grammar analysis in first and second grade.
