Frequently Asked Questions
Articles are the small words a, an, and the that come before nouns. A and an are indefinite articles (referring to any one of something: a dog, an apple), while the is the definite article (referring to a specific one: the dog on the porch). CCSS L.1.1h specifically requires first graders to use determiners, including articles. Most first graders use articles correctly in speech but need explicit instruction to understand the rules, particularly the a versus an distinction. The rule is straightforward: use a before words that start with a consonant sound and an before words that start with a vowel sound. Note that it is the sound, not the letter, that matters (a unicorn because the u sounds like y, an hour because the h is silent). Worksheets that present nouns with a blank before them (__ apple, __ dog, __ elephant) and ask children to fill in a or an provide focused practice. Understanding articles helps first graders write grammatically correct sentences and recognize these high-frequency words instantly during reading.
