These Grade 1 worksheets introduce children ages 6-7 to the three main states of matter: solids, liquids, and gases. Students learn to identify each state by its properties, explore everyday examples of each, and begin to understand how matter can change from one state to another with changes in temperature. A classic physical science topic that makes abstract chemistry concepts concrete for young learners. Part of our material properties worksheets collection.

What You'll Learn

  • Identify examples of solids, liquids, and gases from everyday life
  • Describe one property that makes each state of matter different from the others
  • Explain what happens when a solid melts or a liquid freezes

FAQ

What does solids, liquids, and gases teach first graders?

First graders learn that matter exists in three states and that each state behaves differently: solids have a fixed shape, liquids flow and take the shape of their container, and gases spread out to fill their container. They identify familiar examples of each state and explore simple examples of state changes, like ice melting to water.

When do first graders learn about solids, liquids, and gases?

The three states of matter are typically introduced in Grade 1 during a physical science or matter unit. Teachers often use water in its three forms, ice, liquid water, and steam (carefully), as a central example.

How can I use these worksheets at home?

Cook or bake together and point out examples of all three states: the solid butter, the liquid oil, the steam rising from a pot. Ask your child to classify what they see and explain their reasoning. Watching ice melt in a glass at the table is also a simple, engaging demonstration of a state change.
