What's the difference between identifying an affix and writing with prefixes and suffixes?

Identifying an affix is a reading task: given a word like careless, students pull off the suffix and explain what it added to the meaning of care. Writing with prefixes and suffixes is a production task: given an instruction, like add a suffix that means full of, students build the new word themselves. Producing a word from an instruction is measurably harder than labeling one someone else already built.

My child mixes up prefixes and suffixes. How do I explain the difference simply?

A prefix goes at the front and usually changes meaning (re- means again, un- means not). A suffix goes at the end and often changes either meaning or the word's job in a sentence (-ful adds meaning, -ing changes a verb's tense). A simple trick: prefix starts with pre, which means before, so it comes before the word.

These affixes and compound words worksheets for third grade teach students to break unfamiliar words into meaningful parts: prefixes and suffixes that change a root word's meaning (unhappy, careless), and compound words built from two smaller words (sunlight, backpack). Students both identify affixes in existing words and build new words themselves from an instruction, which is the harder, production side of the skill (L.3.4b, L.3.4c). This is one of the most transferable vocabulary strategies at this age, since it lets students work out brand-new words on their own.

Both skills teach the same underlying idea at a more advanced level than earlier grades: a word's meaning is often built from smaller, separately meaningful pieces (CCSS L.3.4b, L.3.4c). Compound words combine two whole words (sunlight from sun and light), while affixes attach a piece to a root that changes its meaning (unhappy from un and happy). Once a student sees words this way, unfamiliar long words become less intimidating.
