1st Grade Fables Worksheets

Ages 6-7 · 16 sub-topics · Free previews · Print-ready PDFs

Our fables and rhymes worksheets for 1st grade bring 16 original short fables and poems to young readers, each with a lesson to find and talk about. Students read about kind scarecrows, stubborn bears, and midnight meadow bands, then answer questions about what happened and what the story teaches. Poems keep their sing-song rhythm so reading aloud feels like play. Aligned to RL.1.2.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fables are short, follow a predictable structure, and end with a clear lesson, which makes them ideal for teaching central message. CCSS RL.1.2 asks first graders to retell stories and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson, and fables make that lesson explicit and discussable. Because fables feature animal characters with strong traits, they also give children easy practice describing characters and their actions (RL.1.3).
