The Lizard Who Told Tall Tales (Fable)
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"The Lizard Who Told Tall Tales (Fable)" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core RL.2.2. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on fables, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and fables with lessons never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this fables with lessons worksheet?
⌄
Let your child read the fable aloud, then ask what the main character learned before turning the page. Talk about a time the lesson could help at home or school. Check with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Read the fable of the lizard and his tall tales, then find the lesson about telling the truth. A fable is a short story that teaches a lesson. A tall tale is a made-up story that is hard to believe. The directions on the page read: Read the fable. Then, answer the questions on page 2. On page 2: Use the fable on page 1. Circle the letter of the best answer. Then, write your answer on the lines. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.
Can I use this fables with lessons worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade fables, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with fables with lessons. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is the moral of a fable?
⌄
The moral is the lesson the story teaches. In a fable, the characters, often animals, make a choice, and what happens next shows the lesson.
How do 2nd graders find the central message?
⌄
Ask what the main character learned by the end and whether the choice helped or hurt. RL.2.2 asks children to tell the central message, lesson or moral of a story.
Are these classic Aesop fables?
⌄
No. They are new stories written for these sheets, so children cannot rely on knowing the ending and have to read for the lesson.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All eight fables have an answer key for the question page.
How many 2nd Grade fables with lessons worksheets are there?
⌄
8 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.
What age are fables with lessons worksheets for?
⌄
These are written for 2nd Grade students, roughly ages 7-8. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.
Are these fables with lessons worksheets aligned to Common Core?
⌄
Yes. Each one shows the Common Core code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.
