Letter Recognition and Beginning Sounds▼

Frequently Asked Questions

Knowing a letter means two things: recognizing its shape and knowing the sound it makes at the start of a word. Hearing that ball, bat and bus all begin with the same sound is one of the most useful listening skills a preschooler can build, and it grows from saying words out loud with a grown-up. The 42 pages here are all listening and looking, with no reading needed. On the match the letter to the picture pages, children say each picture name and draw a line from a letter to the picture that starts with its sound. Sounds you can hold, like m, s and f, come first. On the circle pictures pages, a grown-up names six pictures and the child circles every one that starts with the letter at the top, A to Z. Every page has an answer key.
