What is the fastest way to teach the its/it's rule so it actually sticks?

Teach the swap test: if it is or it has fits in the sentence, the word is it's; if neither fits, it's its. The cat licked its paw fails the swap (the cat licked it is paw makes no sense), so the answer stays its with no apostrophe. Running every sentence through that test out loud, rather than trying to memorize the rule as an abstract statement, is what makes it hold up under real writing pressure.

How is multiple meaning words different from homophones on this same page?

Homophones are two different words that happen to sound alike (its and it's). Multiple meaning words are one single word that carries two unrelated meanings depending on context, like bark meaning a dog's sound or a tree's covering.
