3rd Grade Writing Process Worksheets

Ages 8-9 · 4 sub-topics · Free previews · Print-ready PDFs

These writing process worksheets for 3rd grade take one step of writing at a time, from planning to the final check (CCSS W.3.5). Prewriting pages are planners for a personal narrative on a story mountain, an opinion letter to the principal, an informative report with three fact boxes, a fantasy story about a dragon afraid of the dark and a thank you letter to a community helper, plus pages on narrowing a big topic and taking notes from a short article. Revising pages have children add details, place time order words, cut a sentence that does not belong, pick a better topic sentence and swap said for stronger dialogue tags. Descriptive language pages practice show, not tell, the five senses and strong verbs, and editing pages cover capitals in names and places, commas in a series, run on sentences, misspelled words and editing marks (L.3.2). There are 28 original sheets, including a main idea web, a revise for details page and an edit for capitals and commas page; 18 have an answer key, and the 10 without one are planners and open writing pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is the set of steps writers use: plan, draft, revise, edit and share. CCSS W.3.5 asks 3rd graders to strengthen their writing with guidance from adults and peers by planning, revising and editing. These sheets give each step its own page, so a child can practice one step at a time.
