What's the difference between circle first, cross out last and write words in order?

Circle first, cross out last only asks a student to identify the earliest and latest word in a short list, without sorting everything in between, which is a smaller and faster task. Write words in order requires fully sorting five or six scrambled words start to finish, which demands holding the whole list in mind at once rather than making one quick comparison.

Where does alphabetizing actually get used once the worksheet is done?

It's a genuine reference skill, not just school busywork: looking up a word in a dictionary or glossary, finding a book by author on a library shelf, or navigating any index all depend on it. Third grade is typically when students start doing real research and reference work in other subjects, which is exactly when this skill stops being abstract and starts being useful.
