About these printable writing frames
A writing frame gives a child the shape of a piece before they have to invent it. Sentence starters, a box for the beginning, a box for what happened next, a line for how it ended. For a student who freezes at a blank page, that structure is the difference between writing nothing and writing something.
The point is to remove the frame eventually. Start with heavy scaffolding, move to a version with fewer prompts, then to plain paper. These are organised so you can see that progression and pick the level a particular child is actually ready for.

- When they start ignoring the prompts and writing past them. That is the signal the structure is now internal. Move to a lighter frame first rather than jumping straight to blank paper, so the drop in support is gradual.
- Do writing frames limit creativity?
- Used permanently they can. Used as a temporary scaffold they do the opposite, because a child who is not spending all their effort on structure has attention left for word choice and ideas.
- What is the difference between a writing frame and a graphic organizer?
- A graphic organizer is for planning, capturing ideas before writing. A writing frame is for drafting, giving the sentences themselves a shape. Many teachers use one then the other.
