Substitute Teacher Lesson Plans and Emergency Sub Plans

Emergency sub plans have one requirement the rest of planning does not: they have to work for someone who has never met your class, found the folder ten minutes ago, and cannot ask you anything.

What a usable sub plan contains

A stated objective, materials that are already printed, steps written for someone unfamiliar with your routines, and an independent task long enough to fill the block. Anything requiring your judgement in the moment will not survive.

Print it in advance

The plan that saves you is the one already in the folder before you are sick. Print two or three of these at the start of term and leave them in a drawer.

Over-supply the practice

A sub cannot improvise more work. Leave more pages than the block needs; the extras are better than a room with fifteen minutes and nothing to do.
