Kindergarten is the year the formal skills start: letters to sounds, numerals to quantities, and the first independent writing. Lessons still run on short blocks with plenty of modelling.

Kindergarten math moves from counting objects to recognising and writing numerals, then to joining and separating small groups. By the end of the year most children work confidently within 10 and are meeting 20.

Kindergarten reading joins letters to sounds. Phonemic awareness, letter-sound correspondence, and the first sight words turn decoding from guesswork into a method.

Kindergarten grammar is sentence-shaped: capital at the start, a mark at the end, and words with spaces between them. Parts of speech arrive as naming and doing words.

Kindergarten vocabulary grows through talk and pictures: naming things precisely, noticing words that sound alike, and matching words to meaning.

Kindergarten science is noticing. Weather, plants, animals and the five senses, taught through observation and description rather than explanation.
