Small Group Lesson Plans
Small-group teaching is where the whole-class check-for-understanding pays off. You pulled these four students because the evidence said so, and the group exists to close one specific gap.
Group from evidence, not impression
Pull the group from something you collected, not from a sense of who seems to be struggling. The check step in each lesson plan is designed to produce exactly that evidence.
Go back further than feels necessary
If a student cannot regroup, the gap is often place value rather than the algorithm. Re-teaching the algorithm louder does not work. Drop back a level and rebuild.
Keep groups fluid
A group formed in September and still intact in March has stopped being an intervention and started being a label. Re-form them from fresh evidence every few weeks.
