Preschool Syllables Worksheets
Ages 3-5 · 30 worksheets · 30 answer keys · Print-ready PDFs
A syllable is one beat in a spoken word. Cat has one, apple has two and banana has three. Clapping out those beats is a natural, active way for preschoolers to start hearing that words can be broken into parts, and many children can clap the syllables in familiar words, including their own name, by around age 4.
The 30 pages in this section keep the focus on listening. Children say each word, clap once for every beat and circle the number of claps, and on the sort by beats pages they cut out pictures, clap the names and paste each one into a 1, 2 or 3 beat column. Short syllable check-ins give a grown-up a quick look at whether a child can hear and count beats; for those, the adult says each word so the child does not need to read. Every page has an answer key.
