Preschool Letter Recognition Worksheets

Ages 3-5 · 44 worksheets · 44 answer keys · Print-ready PDFs

Letter recognition means seeing a letter and knowing which one it is, whether it appears as a big uppercase letter or a small lowercase one, and whether it sits alone or in a crowd of other letters. For children aged 3–5, this visual skill sits between knowing the alphabet song and connecting letters to their sounds.

The 44 pages here ask children to circle every big and small copy of one letter hidden in a box of mixed letters, draw lines from uppercase letters to their lowercase partners five letters at a time, and complete short check-ins where they name and circle three letters. The check-ins are useful for a grown-up who wants to see which letters a child already knows on sight. Every page has an answer key, so checking takes a moment.

Frequently Asked Questions

It varies widely. Many 4-year-olds recognize the letters in their own name and a handful of others, and many children know most uppercase letters by the end of preschool. Recognizing all 26 uppercase and lowercase letters is usually a kindergarten goal, so a 4-year-old who still mixes up several letters is common and not a cause for concern.
