Preschool Word Building Worksheets

Ages 3-5 · 50 worksheets · 50 answer keys · Print-ready PDFs

Word building is the step where a child uses the sounds they hear to put letters together into real words. In preschool this starts small: writing the first letter of a familiar word, then trying all three sounds in a short word like cat or sun. Around ages 4 and 5, many children start attempting their own spellings, and practicing spelling often helps their reading as well.

The 50 pages here move in that order. Children say picture names and write the missing first letter, write one letter for each of the three sounds in a picture name, spell color words letter by letter in boxes before tracing them and circling things of that color, and finish spelling a first name before tracing it and circling its first letter. Each page has an answer key for quick checking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Invented spelling, such as writing KT for cat, is a normal and useful stage. It shows the child is listening for sounds and matching them to letters, which is exactly the skill word building practices. Praise the sounds they got right and model the correct spelling gently, rather than correcting every attempt, so the child keeps trying.
