4th Grade Writing Process Worksheets

Ages 9-10 · 5 sub-topics · Free previews · Print-ready PDFs

These writing process worksheets for 4th grade walk children through planning, revising, describing and editing longer pieces (CCSS W.4.5). Prewriting pages include an opinion essay about a class pet, a mystery at a campground on a plot diagram, an explanatory essay on how something works, a Venn diagram for a compare and contrast essay, a persuasive letter to the town council, a biography timeline, a book review and a formal outline, plus note taking from two sources. Revising pages cover hooks, conclusions, linking words, repeated words, choppy sentences, sentence beginnings and adding facts to a draft about honeybees. Twelve descriptive language pages practice vivid verbs, precise nouns, sensory details for a thunderstorm, show, not tell, adverbs and spatial order words, and editing pages cover commas in dialogue, capitals in titles, to, too and two, verb tenses, proofreading marks and a peer review checklist. Ten paragraph organization pages practice five kinds of hooks, sentence order, topic sentences, transitions by purpose, the sentence that does not belong and closing sentences, with planners for a hamburger paragraph, a topic sentence ladder, steps in order and a matching introduction and conclusion (W.4.2.A, W.4.2.C). There are 48 original sheets, including a graphic organizer for an essay, a word choice revision and a run ons and fragments edit; 31 have an answer key, and the 17 without one are planners.

Frequently Asked Questions

CCSS W.4.5 asks 4th graders to plan, revise and edit with guidance from adults and peers. In practice that means planning a whole essay before drafting, revising for a strong opening and closing, and editing for the grammar rules in L.4.1 and L.4.2. These sheets give each of those jobs its own page.
