5th Grade Creative Writing Worksheets

Ages 10-11 · 1 sub-topic · Free previews · Print-ready PDFs

These creative writing worksheets for 5th grade walk students through planning and drafting an original story (CCSS W.5.3). Each story topic comes with its own organizer: a plot diagram for a clock that runs backward, a world building chart for a city above the clouds, a motivation chart for the last library on Earth, a character arc for a robot who writes poems and a frame story plan for a letter from 100 years ago. Other sheets practice pacing, transition phrases, precise setting words, dialogue with inner thoughts and choosing a point of view. On page two, students write the story in at least four paragraphs, then reread it and fix mistakes. Ten original two-page sheets.

Frequently Asked Questions

CCSS W.5.3 asks 5th graders to write narratives with a clear situation and characters, dialogue and description, pacing, events in a logical order and a real ending. Each sheet works on one of those parts while the student plans and writes a full story.
