The Robot Who Wrote Poems Story Writing

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"The Robot Who Wrote Poems Story Writing" is written for 5th Grade (Ages 10-11), and it covers Common Core W.5.3. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on creative writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and story writing never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this story writing worksheet?

⌄

Read the topic and the definition box together, then let your child talk the story through before filling in the organizer. After the draft, have them read it aloud and check that each box from page one shows up in the story.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Plan a character arc for Bolt, a factory robot who writes poems, with proof at the start and end, then write the story. A character arc is the way a character changes from the start of a story to the end. The directions on the page read: Read the topic. Then, write notes in each box, following its hint. Then, use your notes to write your draft on page 2. On page 2: Write a title on the Title line. Then, use your organizer on page 1 to write your story in at least 4 paragraphs. Then, reread it and fix any mistakes.

Can I use this story writing worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 5th Grade creative writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with story writing. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What does 5th grade creative writing cover?

⌄

CCSS W.5.3 asks 5th graders to write narratives with a clear situation and characters, dialogue and description, pacing, events in a logical order and a real ending. Each sheet works on one of those parts while the student plans and writes a full story.

How do I help my child get started on a story?

⌄

Read the topic box and the definition at the top together, then talk the story through before any writing. Once the organizer is filled in, it works like a map, and page two becomes turning each box into a paragraph.

What is pacing in a story?

⌄

Pacing is how fast or slow a story moves. Writers slow down for an important moment with details and thoughts, and speed up through less important parts. The Secret Signal sheet has students plan one slow moment and one fast moment before writing.

Why is there no answer key?

⌄

Every child writes a different story, so there is no single right answer. Use the organizer on page one as a checklist instead: does the draft include each part your child planned, in at least four paragraphs?
