1st Grade Word Meanings Worksheets

Ages 6-7 · 5 sub-topics · Free previews · Print-ready PDFs

These word meanings worksheets for first grade help students figure out what a word means using pictures, definitions, and context clues (L.1.4, L.1.4a). Students match pictures to words, read simple definitions, and use the words around an unfamiliar word to work out its meaning. They also practice sorting words into categories and spotting the one that does not belong, which builds the same word-relationship thinking that supports reading comprehension later on (L.1.5a).

Frequently Asked Questions

At this age, students use three main tools: pictures, definitions, and context clues. Picture-matching worksheets let students connect a word to an image before they can define it in words, which is often the first step. Context-clue practice (CCSS L.1.4a) asks students to read the sentences around an unfamiliar word and use them to guess its meaning, the same strategy skilled readers use automatically. Categorizing words and spotting the word that does not belong build the same skill from a different angle: students have to know what a word means well enough to compare it to others.
