Why do word meanings worksheets matter for reading comprehension?

Vocabulary and comprehension are tightly linked. A first grader who stops on an unfamiliar word loses the thread of the sentence, but a student who can use context clues or picture support can often keep reading without breaking comprehension. Building this habit early, before texts get more complex in second and third grade, is one of the highest-leverage things a first grade classroom can do for later reading scores.

What is the difference between a definition worksheet and a context clues worksheet?

A definition worksheet gives students a short, simple explanation of a word and asks them to match it to the right term or picture, which tests recognition. A context clues worksheet gives students a full sentence with the word already inside it and asks them to work out the meaning from how it is used, which tests inference. Both matter: definitions build a base vocabulary, and context clues teach the strategy students will need for every unfamiliar word they meet in the future, since no dictionary will always be within reach.

At this age, students use three main tools: pictures, definitions, and context clues. Picture-matching worksheets let students connect a word to an image before they can define it in words, which is often the first step. Context-clue practice (CCSS L.1.4a) asks students to read the sentences around an unfamiliar word and use them to guess its meaning, the same strategy skilled readers use automatically. Categorizing words and spotting the word that does not belong build the same skill from a different angle: students have to know what a word means well enough to compare it to others.
