Guided Reading Lesson Plans

Guided reading is small-group work: four to six students at a similar level, a text just above what they can read alone, and a teacher close enough to hear every error.

The shape of a guided reading lesson

Introduce the text and its tricky vocabulary, listen to students read individually while the rest read quietly, then discuss comprehension. Twenty minutes is usually enough.

Choosing the text level

The text should be hard enough to require strategy and easy enough to sustain meaning, roughly 90 to 95 percent accuracy. If a student is below that, the group is wrong for them.

Listen, do not chorus

The point of the group is hearing individuals read. Choral reading hides exactly the errors you convened the group to find.
