5th Grade Writing Process Worksheets

Ages 10-11 · 5 sub-topics · Free previews · Print-ready PDFs

These writing process worksheets for 5th grade prepare children for research reports, arguments and longer stories (CCSS W.5.5). Prewriting pages include note cards for a research report, an argument about lunch breaks with a counterclaim, a narrative that starts in the action, a problem and solution essay about litter at the park, a cause and effect essay about a snowstorm, a class election speech and a how to guide for a container garden, plus pages on paraphrasing and listing sources in a bibliography (W.5.8). Revising and sentence variety pages cover contrast transitions, stronger evidence, formal and informal language, three ways to start a story, combining choppy sentences, cutting extra words and varying sentence length (L.5.3.A). Descriptive language pages practice precise science words, a sensory setting and character traits shown through actions and dialogue, and editing pages cover commas after introductory words, verb tense shifts, titles, a news article with editing marks, tricky spellings and a peer review rubric. There are 28 original sheets, including a five paragraph essay plan, a revise for voice page and a grammar and spelling edit; 19 have an answer key, and the 9 without one are planners and open writing pages.
