FAQ

How do I use this prewriting worksheet?

⌄

Use the planner that matches the assignment, and fill it in with short phrases. For the argument planner, have your child argue the other side out loud before writing the counterclaim. Draft from the plan one section at a time.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Plan a problem and solution essay about litter at the park with causes, three solutions with pros and cons. A pro is a good point about a solution. A con is a drawback. The directions on the page read: Read the model. Then, describe the problem and 2 causes. Then, write 3 solutions, each with a pro and a con. Then, pick the best solution, tell why, and write a conclusion. Then, use your plan to write your draft on lined paper.

Can I use this prewriting worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 5th Grade writing process, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with prewriting. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a counterclaim?

⌄

A counterclaim is the main reason someone might disagree with your claim. Naming it and answering it with a rebuttal makes an argument stronger. The lunch break planner has a box for each part: claim, three reasons, counterclaim, rebuttal and conclusion.

How do note cards help with a research report?

⌄

Each card holds one fact, a heading and the source it came from. When the notes are done, children group the cards with the same heading, and each group becomes a section of the report. This is the note taking in W.5.8.

How should my child list sources?

⌄

A bibliography lists each source with details such as the author and title, in order by the author's last name. The bibliography page gives the facts about each source, so your child practices the format before using it on real research.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

The paraphrase, bibliography and five paragraph essay plan pages have an answer key. The seven planners have no key, since each child plans their own piece. Check that every box is filled and each reason has support.

What does the writing process look like in 5th grade?

⌄

Fifth graders plan, revise, edit and rewrite with some guidance from adults and peers (CCSS W.5.5). The work shifts toward research and argument: taking notes, paraphrasing, listing sources and answering a counterclaim. These sheets give each of those steps its own page.

How do I help my child paraphrase without copying?

⌄

Have your child read the passage, cover it, and say the idea out loud in their own words before writing. Then compare with the source and change any long string of the same words. The paraphrase page shows a source with choices first, so your child sees what a good paraphrase looks like.

What is sentence variety?

⌄

Sentence variety means mixing short and long sentences and starting them in different ways, so writing does not sound choppy (L.5.3.A). The three sentence variety pages have children combine short sentences, cut extra words and count words to vary sentence length.

Do the 5th grade writing process worksheets have answer keys?

⌄

19 of the 28 sheets have an answer key, including every editing and sentence variety page. The 9 planners and open writing pages, such as the argument planner, the story lead page and the setting builder, have no key, since each child writes their own piece.
