Frequently Asked Questions

Symbols are pictures or objects that stand for something bigger, like the American flag for the United States or a pumpkin for fall holidays. Preschoolers see symbols everywhere, and talking about them is a gentle first step into the traditions families and communities share. These 6 pages mix symbols with celebrations. Children color the American flag and count its parts, match American symbols to their shadows, and match holidays to the pictures that go with them. Other pages are personal: children draw their own birthday party, draw something they are thankful for and share it, and circle the ways their family celebrates. A grown-up reads each direction aloud, and three pages have an answer key.
