4th Grade Poetry Worksheets

Ages 9-10 · 2 sub-topics · Free previews · Print-ready PDFs

These poetry worksheets for 4th grade use original poems to show how poems are built and how to write them. On the reading pages, children count the stanzas in a narrative poem about fixing an old rowboat, mark the rhyme scheme of a limerick, find the couplets in a poem about fall leaves, clap the beats of a jump rope chant, and tell how a poem about a lost puppy differs from a play with a cast and stage directions (CCSS RL.4.5). Other reading pages follow a speaker's feelings about being a new student, explain a repeated line in a poem about rain, and retell a story poem about a lost dog (RL.4.2). On the writing pages, children plan and write a diamante, a limerick, rhyming quatrains about snow, a list poem, a five senses poem about the beach and an unrhymed poem about a favorite place, each with a model poem and a rule to check (W.4.3.D). There are 16 original sheets; the 10 reading sheets have an answer key.
