5th Grade Poetry Worksheets

Ages 10-11 · 2 sub-topics · Free previews · Print-ready PDFs

These poetry worksheets for 5th grade use original poems to show how poets build meaning. Children describe the speaker of an unrhymed poem about a race (CCSS RL.5.6), find sight, sound and touch details in a poem about a forest, explain a figurative line in an ode to old sneakers (RL.5.4), and name the theme of a poem about a neighbor who shovels snow (RL.5.2). Other reading pages follow the story in a ballad about a lighthouse, find the rhyme scheme and beats in a poem about a train, count syllables in four seasonal haiku, tell how the stanzas of a garden poem fit together (RL.5.5) and compare two winter poems. On the writing pages, children plan and write an ode to an everyday object, an unrhymed poem about a memory, an imagery poem about a storm, two tanka and a poem for two voices about a cat and a dog (W.5.3.D). There are 14 original sheets; the 9 reading sheets have an answer key.
