4th Grade Narrative Writing Worksheets

Fourth graders learn to write a real narrative with a clear beginning, middle, and end, using details that make a reader feel present (CCSS W.4.3). They start by orienting the reader and establishing a situation and characters (W.4.3a), then build a plot with a problem and a resolution. Along the way they practice the craft moves that separate a story from a summary: opening with a hook, developing characters through what they say and do, creating a setting the reader can picture, and using dialogue and description to move the action (W.4.3b). A signature fourth grade skill is show, don't tell, replacing "She was scared" with "Her hands shook as she reached for the doorknob," which draws on sensory details (W.4.3d). Students also work with point of view, small-moment writing (zooming in on one important minute instead of a whole day), and personal narratives from their own lives. Worksheets and graphic organizers that break narrative into these parts, hook, setting, character, plot, and sensory detail, then give a full lined page to write it out, match the way CCSS W.4.3 expects students to build a story piece by piece.
