Plan a Personal Narrative That Climbs to a Peak Moment
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Plan a Personal Narrative That Climbs to a Peak Moment" is written for 4th Grade (Ages 9-10), and it covers Common Core W.4.3.A. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on narrative writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and writing personal narratives never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this writing personal narratives worksheet?
⌄
Help your child choose one short, true moment and tell it out loud first. Fill the planner with notes, then write the draft and check it against the checklist on page two.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Read a made-up model about a snoring dog, then climb a story mountain to the peak moment of an exciting day you remember. Rising action builds up to the climax, the most exciting part. The directions on the page read: Read the model. Read the topic. Then, climb the story mountain: write the beginning, the 2 rising action boxes and the peak. Then, write the falling action and the end. Then, use your plan to write your draft on lined paper.
Can I use this writing personal narratives worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 4th Grade narrative writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with writing personal narratives. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is a personal narrative?
⌄
A personal narrative is a true story from your own life, told in first person. In 4th grade it focuses on one event and adds dialogue, thoughts and sensory details, as in the planner about a meal you shared with people you remember.
How do you slow down a moment in a personal narrative?
⌄
Stretch the most important moment over several sentences: what you saw, heard, did and thought, second by second. The brave moment planner has a box just for the moment, slowed down, and the one minute planner narrows a big topic to a single minute.
What is a reflection?
⌄
A reflection tells what the experience taught you or why it matters. The mistake you fixed planner ends with what you would tell a friend, and the place that matters planner ends with why it matters.
Is there an answer key?
⌄
No. Every true story is different. Check that each box on the planner is filled in and that the draft follows the plan and the checklist on page two.
