Plan a Personal Narrative About a Time You Felt Nervous
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Plan a Personal Narrative About a Time You Felt Nervous" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core W.3.3.B. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on narrative writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and writing personal narratives never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

3rd grade writing worksheet: read a model about a surprise visit, then chart your body and thoughts before, during and after a time you felt nervous. Part of our writing personal narratives collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.

FAQ
How do I use this writing personal narratives worksheet?
⌄
Help your child choose one small moment, such as a single afternoon, not a whole vacation. Talk it through in order, fill the planner with short notes and then write the draft on page two or on lined paper.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Read a model about a surprise visit, then chart your body and thoughts before, during and after a time you felt nervous. A small moment is one short, true time in a personal narrative. The directions on the page read: Read the model. Read the topic. Then, fill in the chart: for before, during and after, write what your body did and what you thought. Then, write an ending. Then, use your plan to write your draft on lined paper.
Can I use this writing personal narratives worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade narrative writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with writing personal narratives. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is a personal narrative?
⌄
A personal narrative is a true story from your own life, told with I and events in order. It ends by telling how you felt or what you learned, like the planner about taking care of a pet, a plant or a younger child.
What are time order words?
⌄
Time order words like First, Next, Then and Last show the order of events (W.3.3.C). On the learning a new skill planner, each of the 4 event boxes starts with one of them.
How do I help my child start a true story with a hook?
⌄
Try three kinds of hooks: a question, a sound word and an action. One planner has children write all three for a time they helped at home, then pick the one that grabs the reader best.
