A Message in a Bottle Story Writing
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"A Message in a Bottle Story Writing" is written for 4th Grade (Ages 9-10), and it covers Common Core W.4.3. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on creative writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and story writing never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this story writing worksheet?
⌄
Read the topic and the definition box together, and let your child talk the plot through before writing in the organizer. After the draft, have them reread it aloud and fix any mistakes, as page two asks.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Circle a first or third person narrator and plan a story about a message in a bottle, then write it in 4 paragraphs. The narrator tells the story. A first-person narrator says I; a third-person narrator says he, she, or they. The directions on the page read: Read the topic. Then, circle the narrator you will use. Then, fill in each box. Then, write your story on page 2. On page 2: Write a title on the Title line. Then, use your organizer on page 1 to write your story in at least 4 paragraphs. Then, reread it and fix any mistakes.
Can I use this story writing worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 4th Grade creative writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with story writing. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What does 4th grade narrative writing require?
⌄
W.4.3 asks for a situation and narrator, events that unfold naturally, dialogue and description, transition words, concrete and sensory details and a conclusion. Each sheet focuses on one of these while the student writes a whole story.
What is show, don't tell?
⌄
Telling names a feeling: Omar was scared. Showing lets the reader see it: Omar's hands shook as he backed away from the frame. The Mysterious Neighbor sheet has students rewrite tell sentences as show sentences.
How do I help my child choose first or third person?
⌄
First person uses I and tells the story from inside one character. Third person uses he, she or they and can follow more than one character. A Message in a Bottle has students circle one before planning.
Is there an answer key?
⌄
No. Every story is different. Check that the draft follows the organizer on page one, has at least four paragraphs and uses the skill the sheet practices.
How many 4th Grade story writing worksheets are there?
⌄
12 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.
What age are story writing worksheets for?
⌄
These are written for 4th Grade students, roughly ages 9-10. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.
