Is It Hot or Cold?

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Is It Hot or Cold?" is written for Kindergarten (Ages 5-6), and it covers NGSS K-ESS2-1. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on weather and seasons, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and temperature never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

Is It Hot or Cold?

Circle hot or cold for everyday things, from soup to a snowball. Part of our temperature weather and seasons collection. Aligned to NGSS standards.

How do I use this worksheet?

Start with something students can look at or think about: a photo, a short video, a jar on the windowsill, or a question like "what do you already know about temperature?" Then let them work through it with your modeling first (do the first item together on the board), then try the rest with a partner, keeping a word bank or anchor chart in view so the vocabulary stays available. When you review, ask students how they knew, and let them point to the part of the diagram or reading that told them. These temperature worksheets work well as a lead in before an investigation, as a way to capture what students noticed afterward, or as review before an assessment.

What students will practice

  • Describe temperature as how hot or cold something feels
  • Identify that thermometers measure temperature
  • Sort weather as hot, warm, cool, or cold based on temperature clues

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

These temperature worksheets for Kindergarten give students a clear, visual way to work through one of the big ideas in weather and seasons. Students label diagrams, sort and classify examples, read short explanations, and answer questions that ask them to say why, not just what. Each page keeps the science vocabulary front and center so students leave with the words they need to talk about temperature accurately. Working through temperature on paper gives Kindergarten students something concrete to hold onto before, during, or after the hands on part of a lesson.

Can I use this temperature worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for Kindergarten weather and seasons, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with temperature. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What do temperature worksheets teach kindergartners?

⌄

Temperature worksheets teach kindergartners to describe things as hot, warm, cool, or cold and to understand that temperature tells us how warm or cold something is. Children may also be introduced to a simple thermometer and learn to connect temperature readings to weather and what to wear.

When do kindergartners learn about temperature?

⌄

Temperature is introduced in kindergarten as part of the weather and seasons unit in Earth science. It is often connected to daily weather observations and helps children begin to understand measurement and scientific tools.

How can I use these worksheets at home?

⌄

Point out a thermometer on a weather app or outside your home and connect it to what your child is wearing that day. Ask simple questions like 'Is it hotter or colder than yesterday?' to build temperature comparison skills alongside the worksheet activities.

How many Kindergarten temperature worksheets are there?

⌄

1 printable worksheet, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.

What age are temperature worksheets for?

⌄

These are written for Kindergarten students, roughly ages 5-6. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.

Are these temperature worksheets aligned to NGSS?

⌄

Yes. Each one shows the NGSS code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.

Can I use these temperature worksheets for homeschool?

⌄

Yes. Nothing here assumes a classroom of 25, so they work the same one-to-one at the kitchen table as they do in a Kindergarten classroom, a literacy centre, or a tutoring session.
