FAQ

How do kindergarteners learn to distinguish questions from statements?

Children first learn to identify questions by their meaning - a question asks something and expects an answer - before connecting that concept to the visual question mark. Teachers often model reading questions and statements aloud with exaggerated intonation so children can hear the difference before they see it in writing.

When are question marks introduced relative to periods in kindergarten?

Question marks are typically introduced after children are fairly consistent with periods, usually in mid- to late kindergarten. Introducing them too early, before the period habit is established, can cause children to confuse the two marks or use them interchangeably.

How can parents practice question marks with their kindergartener at home?

Ask your child to write you a question - anything they are curious about - and then check together whether the question mark is at the end. You can also open a favorite picture book and have your child point to any question marks they can find on the page, discussing what the character is asking.
