Maths is the subject where classroom software is most oversold. Two categories genuinely help, one is more limited than the marketing suggests, and one thing it cannot do at all.
The Two That Clearly Work
Virtual manipulatives. Unlimited base ten blocks, fraction strips you can overlay, number lines that stretch. No storage, no lost pieces, no tidying.
Best used after children have handled the physical version. First encounter with an idea should be physical; the digital version is excellent for repetition. More on that split.
Fact fluency practice. Facts have unambiguous right answers, which is exactly what software checks well. Immediate feedback, adaptive difficulty, and volume without your marking time.
The caveat, from fact fluency: avoid anything where speed against other children is the mechanic.
Adaptive Programs, Honestly
The pitch is that the program finds each child's level and moves them along it. Broadly it does, for a specific kind of maths.
What they do well: procedural fluency, fact recall, accuracy on well-defined question types. Genuine value, and the data on who is stuck where is useful.
What they do poorly: reasoning, explanation, multi-step problems where the difficulty is choosing an approach, anything needing to see the method.
So an adaptive program is a fluency tool. Treating it as your maths curriculum produces children who compute well and reason weakly.
Practical position: fifteen minutes twice a week as practice, not as the lesson.

The Thing They Cannot Do
Show you the method.
A child answers 51 for 34 + 27. On paper you see immediately whether they forgot to regroup, whether the digits were misaligned, or whether they counted on and lost track.
An answer box shows one thing: wrong. Three different problems requiring three different responses, collapsed into one signal.
In elementary this matters more than in any later phase, because the method is the learning. That is the honest reason paper practice persists in K-5, and it is not nostalgia. The full comparison is here.
Minutes Are Not Learning
Most maths platforms report time on task, and it gets read as progress.
A child can spend twenty minutes clicking through problems below their level, or guessing until something is accepted. The dashboard shows twenty productive minutes.
What to look at instead: the per-question breakdown. Which specific items did children get wrong, and did they choose the same wrong answer? That names the misconception. Using assessment data covers what to do next.
A Workable Setup
