A right answer tells you very little. A child can get 61 by understanding place value, by counting on their fingers for two minutes, or by guessing.
The method is where the information is.
Ask How, Not What
The simplest change available: after any answer, ask "how did you get that?"
Ask it after right answers as well as wrong ones. If you only ask after wrong answers, children learn that the question means "you're wrong", and they stop thinking and start second-guessing.
Two follow-ups worth having:
- "Did anyone do it a different way?" Now you have two methods on the board and something to compare.
- "Which way was more efficient here?" This is the question that builds judgement rather than just method knowledge.
Give Them the Words
Children usually understand more than they can say. The gap is vocabulary and structure, not thinking.
Sentence stems, on the wall, used every day:
- "I started by..."
- "I knew that ___, so I..."
- "I noticed that..."
- "I agree with ___ because..."
- "I did it a different way. I..."
- "I'm not sure about... because..."
That last one matters. Give children a legitimate way to express partial understanding, or their only options are confident or silent.

The Number Talk
Ten minutes, no writing, whole class.
- Put up one calculation.
48 + 26. - Children solve it mentally, thumb up at their chest when they have it. No hands, so nobody is rushed.
- Take several answers, including wrong ones, and write them all up without judgement.
- Ask children to explain their methods. Record each method visually as they describe it.
- Compare. Which was quickest? Which would work best with different numbers?
The value is entirely in step 4 and 5. Children see that there are several legitimate routes, which is the single biggest shift in how they relate to maths.
Do it three times a week. Ten minutes each.
Use the Wrong Answers
The hardest part for teachers, and the most valuable.
A wrong answer explained clearly is more useful to the class than a right one stated flatly. It surfaces a misconception that several children are probably holding.
Make it safe by treating it as information: "That's really useful, because I bet other people did that too. Let's follow it through and see where it goes."
Never "no, that's wrong" followed by moving to the next child. That teaches the room not to volunteer.
Turn and Talk First
Before taking answers, thirty seconds of talking to a partner.
Now everyone has articulated a thought rather than twenty-three watching one child. It also means the child you call on has already rehearsed, which raises the quality of what you get.

Where the Practice Fits
Maths talk builds reasoning. It does not build fluency, and a class that only does number talks will have children who reason well about facts they cannot recall.
Both, deliberately: talk for the thinking, regular practice for the automaticity that makes the thinking possible.
