FAQ
What verb tenses do 2nd graders learn?⌄
CCSS L.2.1d covers irregular past tense verbs (went, ran, flew, said, bought, grew). CCSS L.2.1e requires correct subject-verb agreement (she runs, they run). Students work with all three tenses — past, present, future — and the difference between -ed endings and irregular forms.
Why are irregular past tenses hard?⌄
English has ~200 irregular past tense verbs that don't follow the -ed rule: run→ran, go→went, see→saw, buy→bought. These are learned only through exposure and use — children learning English hear them constantly in speech, but students learning grammar rules may over-apply the -ed ending (goed, runned, seeed).
How do I practice tenses at home without it feeling like drill?⌄
Tell a story together with tense constraints: 'Yesterday I...' (must use past tense); 'Right now I...' (present); 'Tomorrow I will...' (future). Asking your child to retell something that happened (past) or plan something (future) requires tense use in a meaningful context.
