Ending Sounds Review

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Ending Sounds Review" is written for 1st Grade (Ages 6-7), and it covers Common Core RF.1.2.C. If your little one is a year younger but already steady here, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and ending sounds never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this ending sounds worksheet?

⌄

Have your child say each picture name slowly and stretch the last sound before writing. Point to the letter bank at the top of each page. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Circle single ending sounds, then write sh, ch, mp or nd to finish words. The ending sound is the last sound you hear in a word. In bat, the ending sound is t. The directions on the page read: Say each picture name. Circle the letter for the ending sound in Part A. Then, write the two ending letters in Part B. The answer key shows every answer.

Can I use this ending sounds worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 1st Grade ending sounds, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is an ending sound?

⌄

The ending sound is the last sound you hear in a word. In bat it is t, and in dish it is sh.

Why do children miss ending sounds?

⌄

Young readers often focus on the first letter and guess the rest. Saying the word slowly and stretching the end helps them hear the final sound (RF.1.2.C).

What is the difference between an ending digraph and an ending blend?

⌄

A digraph is two letters that make one sound, like sh in dish. A blend is two letters where you hear both sounds, like n and d in sand.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. Each of the six ending sounds pages has an answer key.
