Write a Rhyming Word

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Write a Rhyming Word" is written for 1st Grade (Ages 6-7), and it covers Common Core RF.1.2. If your little one is a year younger but already steady here, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and rhyming words never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this rhyming words worksheet?

⌄

Say every picture name aloud before your child answers. Read the poem together twice and let your child clap on the rhyming words. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Write the name of a picture that rhymes with the word under the first picture. Words rhyme when they end with the same sound, like pig and wig. The directions on the page read: Read the word under the first picture. Then, write the name of the second picture. It rhymes with the first word. The answer key shows every answer.

Can I use this rhyming words worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 1st Grade rhyming words, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What makes two words rhyme?

⌄

Two words rhyme when they end with the same sound, like pig and wig or cake and snake. The start of the word can be different.

Is rhyming still important in 1st grade?

⌄

Yes. Rhyming helps children see word families, so knowing cat helps them read and spell hat and flat. It also helps with reading poems aloud.

Do rhyming words always end with the same letters?

⌄

Often, but not always. Bear and chair rhyme but are spelled differently, which is why some pages ask children to listen as well as look.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. Each of the six rhyming pages has an answer key.
