Write an Acrostic Poem: CAT
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Write an Acrostic Poem: CAT" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core RL.2.4. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on poetry, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and acrostic poems never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

Acrostic poem worksheet for 2nd grade. Kids read a DOG example, use a word bank, then write a word or phrase for each letter of CAT. Part of our acrostic poems poetry collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Pick the sheet written for your child's grade, or give a strong 2nd grader a 3rd grade sheet. Read the example poem aloud first and point out the letters running down the side. Let students brainstorm before writing so each line has something to say, then have them read their poem aloud to a partner. The SUN sheet has an answer key; the writing sheets are open-ended.
What students will practice
- Students will explain that the first letters of an acrostic poem spell a word, and that the word is the topic of the poem.
- Students will plan an acrostic with a word bank, a list of describing words or an idea web, then write a word or phrase for each letter.
- Older students will add similes and sensory details to their lines and organize a poem into stanzas.

How do I use this acrostic poems worksheet?

What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Six acrostic poem worksheets that step up from 2nd to 4th grade, two per grade. 2nd grade students read a short SUN acrostic and answer questions about it, then write a CAT acrostic with a word bank. 3rd grade students write a two-stanza acrostic for their own name and one for FRIEND, planned with an idea web. 4th grade students write an OCEAN acrostic in phrases with similes and sensory details, then plan, draft and illustrate an acrostic on a topic word they choose. Every sheet defines its terms, such as line, stanza, phrase and simile.
Can I use this acrostic poems worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade poetry, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with acrostic poems. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is an acrostic poem?
⌄
An acrostic poem uses the letters of a word to start each line, and that word is the topic of the poem. In SUN, for example, the lines start with S, U and N and all tell about the sun.
How do acrostic poems change from 2nd to 4th grade?
⌄
2nd grade sheets use one word or a few words per line with a word bank. 3rd grade sheets add a second stanza and describing words. 4th grade sheets ask for full phrases with a simile or a sensory detail.
What grades are these poetry worksheets for?
⌄
2nd, 3rd and 4th grade, with ten sheets for each grade. Each sheet's description names the grade it was written for, so you can choose a level, or move a child up or down a grade when a sheet feels too easy or too hard.
What kinds of poems do these worksheets cover?
⌄
Five: acrostic poems, haiku, rhyming couplets, cinquains and poetry comprehension. Each type has two sheets per grade, usually one to read or practice the form and one to plan and write a poem. The comprehension sheets use original ClassWeekly poems.
What is a cinquain poem?
⌄
A cinquain is a five-line poem. In the word form used in 2nd and 3rd grade, line 1 is a noun, line 2 has two adjectives, line 3 has three -ing verbs, line 4 is a four-word feeling, and line 5 renames line 1. The 4th grade sheets add the syllable form, with 2, 4, 6, 8 and 2 syllables in its lines.
How do you teach kids to count syllables in a haiku?
⌄
Clap once for each beat as you say a word: car-rot is two claps, so it has two syllables. A haiku has three lines with 5, 7 and 5 syllables. The haiku sheets start with clapping picture words, then counting whole lines, then writing a haiku with one dot for each syllable.
Do the poetry worksheets have answer keys?
⌄
18 of the 30 sheets do: every sheet with a right answer, such as counting syllables, finding rhymes or answering questions about a poem. The poem-writing sheets are open-ended, so there is nothing to mark right or wrong.
