Words for Arguing a Point

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Words for Arguing a Point" is written for 5th Grade (Ages 10-11), and it covers Common Core L.5.6. If your little one is a year younger but already steady here, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and academic vocabulary never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this academic vocabulary worksheet?

⌄

Have your child use each new word in a sentence about their own day, like I can infer you are hungry. On the argument page, ask them to point to the claim and the evidence. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Match argument words like claim, reason and evidence to meanings, then study an argument. To argue a point, you make a claim and support it with reasons and evidence, such as facts, numbers or examples. The directions on the page read: In Part A, write the letter of each word's meaning in the box. Then, read the argument in Part B and answer each question. The page opens with a worked example, and the answer key shows every answer.

Can I use this academic vocabulary worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 5th Grade academic vocabulary, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What academic words should a 5th grader know?

⌄

Direction words like analyze, infer, evaluate, summarize and contrast, argument words like claim, reason and evidence, and cross-subject words like significant, impact and obstacle. CCSS L.5.6 asks students to use these general academic words accurately.

Why teach argument words in 5th grade?

⌄

5th graders write opinion pieces and read texts that argue a point. Knowing that a claim is the main point and evidence is the facts that support it helps them both write and judge an argument.

How does reading a history passage help with vocabulary?

⌄

Academic words show up most in content reading. The railroad passage puts words like significant and obstacles in context, so students practice using clues to define them the way they will in social studies.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All four academic vocabulary sheets have an answer key.
