Mixed Analogies

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Mixed Analogies" is written for 5th Grade (Ages 10-11), and it covers Common Core L.5.5. If your little one is a year younger but already steady here, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and analogies never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this analogies worksheet?

⌄

Have your child write the relationship in one or two words above each analogy before choosing. Cross out bank words as they are used. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Complete mixed analogies and name each relationship from a five-letter key. An analogy shows that two word pairs share the same relationship, such as synonyms, antonyms, or part to whole. The directions on the page read: Circle the word that completes each analogy. Then, write the letter of the relationship from the key in the box. The page opens with a worked example, and the answer key shows every answer.

Can I use this analogies worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 5th Grade analogies, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What kinds of analogies do 5th graders solve?

⌄

Besides synonyms and antonyms, 5th graders meet cause and effect (rain is to puddles), degree (warm is to boiling), member and group (robin is to bird), part to whole and tool and use. Naming the relationship is the key step.

What is a degree analogy?

⌄

In a degree analogy, one word is a stronger or weaker form of the other, like damp and soaked. The second pair must change by the same amount: happy is to ecstatic.

How do analogies connect to the standards?

⌄

CCSS L.5.5.C asks students to use the relationship between particular words to understand each word better. Analogies practice exactly that kind of reasoning and build word knowledge at the same time.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All four analogies sheets have an answer key that also names each relationship.
