Multiple Meaning Words in Context
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Multiple Meaning Words in Context" is written for 5th Grade (Ages 10-11), and it covers Common Core L.5.4.A. If your little one is a year younger but already steady here, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and context clues never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this context clues worksheet?
⌄
Ask your child to underline the exact words that gave them the clue before choosing an answer. Have them plug their meaning back into the sentence to see if it still makes sense. Check with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Use dictionary entries and context to choose the meaning of words like draft, pitch and bluff. A multiple-meaning word is spelled and said the same but has more than one meaning. The context, or nearby words, shows which fits. The directions on the page read: Read the dictionary entries and each sentence. Then, write 1 or 2 in the box to show the meaning of the bold word. The page opens with a worked example, and the answer key shows every answer.
Can I use this context clues worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 5th Grade context clues, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
How are 5th grade context clues different from 4th grade?
⌄
5th graders meet fewer stated definitions and more clues they must reason out. An inference clue gives details, like cracked soil and dry stalks, and the reader decides that parched means very dry. CCSS L.5.4.A asks students to use cause and effect, comparisons and other relationships in the text.
What is a contrast clue?
⌄
A contrast clue shows that a word means the opposite of something nearby. Signal words like but, unlike, however and instead of point to it: unlike his timid sister, Leo was bold.
How do context clues help with multiple meaning words?
⌄
A word like pitch can mean throwing a ball or how high a sound is. The nearby words, like batter or singer, show which meaning fits. The last sheet pairs dictionary entries with sentences so students check their choice.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All four 5th grade context clues sheets have an answer key.
