Words for Comparing
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Words for Comparing" is written for 4th Grade (Ages 9-10), and it covers Common Core L.4.6. If your little one is a year younger but already steady here, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and academic vocabulary never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this academic vocabulary worksheet?
⌄
Read each word bank aloud first and ask your child to act out or explain any word they know. For the math page, have them do the arithmetic before choosing the word. Check with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Sort compare and contrast signal words, like both and unlike, and use them in sentences. To compare is to tell how things are alike. To contrast is to tell how things are not alike. Signal words show which one a writer is doing. The directions on the page read: Sort the words into the chart. Then, use a word from the bank to complete sentences 1 to 4. The page opens with a worked example, and the answer key shows every answer.
Can I use this academic vocabulary worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 4th Grade academic vocabulary, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is academic vocabulary?
⌄
Academic vocabulary is the set of words used across school subjects, like explain, identify, evidence and estimate. These words tell students what kind of thinking to do, so a child who misreads summarize as describe can answer a question incorrectly even when they understood the text.
Why does academic vocabulary matter in 4th grade?
⌄
4th grade texts move into science and social studies content, and test questions use more formal directions. CCSS L.4.6 asks students to use general academic and subject-specific words accurately.
How can I help my child learn these words?
⌄
Use them at home. Ask your child to predict what happens next in a show, or to compare two snacks. The worksheet words stick when they hear them outside school.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All four academic vocabulary sheets have an answer key.
