Definition Context Clues
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Definition Context Clues" is written for 4th Grade (Ages 9-10), and it covers Common Core L.4.4.A. If your little one is a year younger but already steady here, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and context clues never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

4th grade vocabulary worksheet: underline the words that give the meaning of each bold word after or, is and which means. Answer key included. Part of our context clues collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Before each page, have your child circle the signal words (or, which means, but, such as) in the first sentence. Ask them to say the meaning in their own words before checking the choices. Use the answer key to check, then reread any sentence that was missed and point to the clue.
What students will practice
- Students will find the definition of a new word inside a sentence.
- Students will tell a synonym clue from an antonym clue.
- Students will use examples and nearby sentences to work out word meaning.

FAQ
How do I use this context clues worksheet?
⌄
Before each page, have your child circle the signal words (or, which means, but, such as) in the first sentence. Ask them to say the meaning in their own words before checking the choices. Use the answer key to check, then reread any sentence that was missed and point to the clue.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Underline the words that give the meaning of each bold word after or, is and which means. A context clue is a hint to a word's meaning. The directions on the page read: Read each sentence. Then, underline the words that tell the meaning of the bold word. The page opens with a worked example, and the answer key shows every answer.
Can I use this context clues worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 4th Grade context clues, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What are context clues in 4th grade?
⌄
Context clues are hints in the words around an unfamiliar word. 4th graders learn the common kinds: a definition right in the sentence (a summit, or the top of the mountain), a synonym or antonym nearby, and a list of examples after such as or including. CCSS L.4.4.A asks them to use these clues to find meaning.
What signal words point to a context clue?
⌄
Or, is and which means often introduce a definition. But and unlike point to an opposite. Such as, like and including come before examples. Teaching your child to spot these words first makes the meaning much easier to find.
What should my child do if the sentence has no clue?
⌄
Read the sentences before and after it. The waterfall story on the last sheet is built for this: the meaning of weary or damp often shows up in the next line, not the same one.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All four context clues sheets have an answer key with every underlined clue and meaning marked.
